2016 American Politics and Fear

The news cycle surrounding the presidential campaign is ridiculous. It's based largely on fear, and focused primarily on perpetuating fear. Rather than focusing on how to progress as a country, and use our unique position in history and in the world to plot the course forward, the endless barrage of headlines is at best nonsensical discourse and at worst doomsday scare tactics.

Fear is the name of the game. The media continually asks how terrible things will be if _____ is elected. Taxes, crime, immigration, economic forecast, and on and on, are all rallying cries to stoke anxiety and fear in the American people. It's no longer, if it ever was...an election about who can best lead the country, but rather who you can't trust and who is bound to lead the country into despair.

Fear sells.

But the thing is...this cycle of fear-based rhetoric and fear-based decision making is far, very far, outside of the Christian faith.

in 2 Timothy 1:7 we read that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and a sound mind.

It's time we claim that, set fear aside, and act as if Jesus is Lord.

As pastor Brian Zahnd posted recently:

In the days of Caligula

Christians didn't care

About palace intrigues

Or who would be

The next emperor

They just lived

As if...

Jesus was Lord
